This was a tough category to get through. I liked the song with Missy Elliott, I liked the Omar Apollo song, and the Beyoncé songs with The-Dream songwriting credits. The rest of it was a barrage of things I do not care for. In my effort to lead a less negative life, I will not comment on the things I did not like. I’m curious if Pusha T is regretting his decision to put a Kanye West cameo on his song.

Blogging the 2023 Grammys – Category 77 – Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical

A Producer’s Award. (Artists names appear in parentheses.)

I’m exhausted looking at how busy these producers were this year. To be fair, a few of them are nominated for stray tracks off the same album, and others produced several full albums this cycle.

Starting with the records Jack Antonoff worked on, I am consistently impressed with the work of Taylor Swift. She is a great songwriter and a compelling performer. Is this work that will stand the test of time? I cannot answer that, but I can hear she is heads and shoulders above her contemporaries.

I didn’t find much in the Florence + The Machine record to enjoy – and Antanoff’s production style is not a style I enjoy. Subduded, mushy drums, prominent vocals front and center of the soundstage with a dab of gauzy reverb, meh.

Diana Ross makes a few appearances with Mr. Antonoff, not really enhancing my life in any way.

The Minions Soundtrack has some cute moments, and several covers of 70s hits. Have you ever wanted to hear Brittany Howard cover Earth, Wind and Fire? St. Vincent tackle “Funkytown?” You get the idea. I’ve seen the movie, the songs work well in it. This release did enhance my life slightly. Thundercat does a nice version of “Fly Like an Eagle.” I typed that like I have any idea who Thundercat is. I didn’t hate the 1975 track, but I am glad it was just one song and not the entire album. This album marks the spot where I have listened to over 1000 tracks so far on this journey. Category 77.

Next up is Dan Auerbach, one half of the Black Keys. I discovered about a decade ago that I like almost everything he produces. He has great taste in selecting artists, and his production style hits my sweet spot of sounding vaguely retro but not obsessively so like the Daptones / Colemine crowd can get. He has 7 artists he’s worked with in this cycle nominated, including the excellent Black Keys record. The only real puzzler here is the Hank Williams, Jr. ‘blues’ album he worked on.

Lost to the mists of time are the instrumental talents of Hank. It used to be a big part of his live shows when he was a teen, where Hank would display his talents on the piano, guitar, dobro, fiddle, etc. As he morphed from the son of Hank Williams into the patron saint of dudes in giant trucks, the focus on his talents waned. Hank did a record sort of like this twenty years ago called “The Almeria Club Recordings” that showcased his more musical side. This time around, he’s featuring his ‘blues’ side, to mixed results. I’m never against an artist stretching or showing us who they “really” are, but in this case the sexist jokes made between songs don’t do much for me or my opinion of Auerbach.

The “Tribute to John Anderson” contains several surprises, including John Prine’s version of one of my favorite John Anderson songs, “1959.” There are a handful of times I have been moved to tears at a concert, and hearing “1959” for the first time at my first John Anderson show was one of those times. John Prine covering this is perfect. Del McCoury covering “Would You Catch a Falling Star” is also perfect. I rate that song as one of the most perfect Country songs of all time, nice to hear it here. I am puzzled that “Swingin’” and “Chicken Truck,” aren’t included, but maybe they weren’t written by him.

I really liked The Velveteers album, especially “Father of Lies.” Ceramic Animal was also a nice listen. I didn’t care for the most overt blues record here, Marcus King. He’s very talented, just not the kind of thing I like.

The next producer in the category is Boi-1da. There are 9 tracks the Academy has seen fit to include in the nominations. I happened to be working in Louisville Kentucky while listening to these tracks, and was surprised to hear “Churchill Downs” from Jack Harlow. I’m not used to hearing about Kentucky in hip-hop. The Beyoncé track percolated nicely, Harlow appears again with a song about his manicurist I think. Giveon has a nice industrial-sounding tune. Kendrick Lamar is here a few times, but nothing that caught my attention.

Next up is the production work of Dahi. Steve Lacy has listened to his fair share of Prince records. Especially the first two – I didn’t hate this, but it is a little too derivative. He has several tracks in Dahi’s list, along with Kendrick Lamar and Vince Staples. I liked most of the Steve Lacy tracks, as well as the Kendrick LamarRich Spirit” track.

Lastly, Dernst “D’mile” Emile II has two full albums and two tracks. The Silk Sonic album has two amazing songs – the uptempo ones. The rest of it is slow jams that really aren’t my thing. Glad to hear Bootsy Collins sprinkled throughout. Lucky Daye has an old-school trip-hop vibe, reminds me of PM Dawn but way better. “Feels Like” is the standout track. Production is great. The Mary J Blige and the track from the Elvis movie are also enjoyable.

Onward to the next category which begins with track 1,133.

Blogging the 2023 Grammys – Category 78 – Best Remixed Recording

A Remixer’s Award. (Artists names appear in parentheses for identification.) Singles or Tracks only.

Here’s another obscure Grammy category – best remix? I usually find some groovy things in here that I was not aware of previously. The Lizzo track sounds like a lost Chic single, and it’s very entertaining. Is the remix worthy of a Grammy? That’s not for me to decide.

The Beyoncé remix is a run of the mill house mix, the likes of which I’ve been hearing for thirty years. No matter what you do, though you won’t break Beyoncé‘s soul.

Ellie Goulding has a Stevie Nicks Stand Back” vibe, updated for the EDM generation. It’s not setting my hair on fire.

The Knocks & Dragonette track is another run of the mill dance tune – with wooshy synths. Probably a fun song to dance to if you’re a little buzzed and 19 years old. I am neither.

The Wet Leg remix doesn’t add much to the original song, it’s just more 8-bit and aggressive. The best part about this category is that it’s so short! I made it!

Blogging the 61st Grammys Category 83 – Best Music Video

Award to the artist, video director, and video producer.

APES*** – The Carters

THIS IS AMERICA – Childish Gambino

I’M NOT RACIST – Joyner Lucas

PYNK  Janelle Monáe

MUMBO JUMBO – Tierra Whack

I guess I’m the last person in the World to realise The Carters are Jay-Z and Beyonce. That said, out of these videos theirs was my favorite. It’s set in the Louvre and is very entertaining and visually interesting. I never would have guessed in a billion years who it was if I hadn’t watched the video. The Childish Gambino was something I wish I hadn’t watched. I love the song and the artist, the video was too violent for me. Joyner Lucas I first heard audio only and it really confused me at first. Seeing the video I totally get it – much better than Brad Paisley and LL Cool J‘s “Accidental Racist” from a few years back. “Pynk” is just ridiculous. I like the song ok, but the video is too over the top for this old man. She gives Hammer a run for his money in the pants department, though. If you enjoy trips to dentist involving lots of blood, you’ll love Tierra Whack. I wish I hadn’t seen this.

Blogging the 2017 Grammys Category 23 – Best Rap/Sung Performance

PRBLMS 6LACK

His girlfriend is mad at him, but he’s not worried because he got a new thing, and it’s all her fault. She wanted fame, he wanted someone who was stable. He’s upset she ordered steak when they went out to eat. Drinking eases his pain. He has real things to worry about, he ain’t worried about her. He has plenty of queens in his own town, all they need is drinking that dank. This is very slow. Not very interesting.

Crew Goldlink Featuring Brent Faiyaz & Shy Glizzy

She sees he has money and therefore she is interested in him. He’s not married. Ray-J is mentioned. Don;t you want to get with him? He is very talented at rhyming and other things. She invited in over but she saw he had a gun. She’s hispanic. He wants to make magic. She sees money all around him. Another slow song, not very interesting. Boring.

Family Feud JAY-Z Featuring Beyoncé

Jay-Z cooked some chicken when the restaurant closed. They’re watching the superbowl. Tupac had a nose ring. Being a billionaire is fun. Why are you drinking Perrier? Two Billionaires are better than one. He said midget, then apologised. Becky should leave him alone. He watched the Godfather, then talks about it for a while. Don’t have a Family Feud. Think Big. Bill Cosby and Al Sharpton. He doesn’t drink Dos Equis. Beyonce sings ‘Higher’ a lot. That’s pretty much it. You don’t need to listen to it now.

LOYALTY. Kendrick Lamar Featuring Rihanna

He thinks she is to die for. Or her anatomy, or something. Rhianna sang Loyalty. She would like him to make some fish. He’s a savage and a king. I have no idea what’s going on or what this is about. He wants to get higher. Loyalty. Don’t switch sides. The song is so slow. Boring.

Love Galore SZA Featuring Travis Scott

Long as they got love. She’s surprised he called after the things she said. Someone turned on the sprinkler hihat. She would like another Valium. That’s probably why the song is so slow. Why is he bothering her when he has another woman. She’s looking forward to the weekend, but he’s married. they do whatever they want, it don’t matter. She gets whatever she wants. It’s about love. She should have never let him hit it. She regrets it. Why are bothering him? You were the one who left. That’s about halfway through the song. I’m moving on with my life.

Blogging the 2017 Grammys Category 25 – Best Rap Album

4:44 JAY-Z

Jay-Z fooled around on Beyonce, now he’s sorry. Has he ever been interesting? Throughout this thing he gives investment advice, apologizes to his wife, and what else? He has a song about watching his wife on the Super Bowl. I think that’s what it’s about. Would you rather be old rich me or new you? Don’t be Eric Benet. Steve Harvey. I think. I hope this doesn’t win.

DAMN. Kendrick Lamar

Everybody loves Kenrick Lamar. George Clinton was on his lat album. U2 is on this one. Hello old man, why don’t you like this, or even find any value in it? Are you too old? Has music passed you by? Nah, you like lots of new music. You just don’t understand this or like it. DNA. gets me bobbing my head a little. Is that what you’re supposed to do? He has a punk-sounding voice. A real John Lydon sneer. Let me sit back and see if old man will enjoy any of this while I eat a waffle. I hear Geraldo. My earbuds can’t handle the bass. I like this better than I did the first time. I like HUMBLE. ok. I prefer the clean versions of these songs. Not a big fan of the B word and N word and any of the words. Tired. I don’t get it. Poor Me.

Culture Migos

Everything is so slow. The hihat sounds like a aprinkler. They are rich now. Everyone underestimated Migos. Look at Migos now. They are rich and they are nominated for a Grammy. They have an Uzi. They have a blunt in the ashtray. They use elipses in their rhymes. Dot dot dot. They have a reverb unit. This is so boring. I don’t get it.

Laila’s Wisdom Rapsody

I’ve been bankin’, check my balance. Out of these, I like this the most. Rapsody has a lot on her mind. She must have notebooks full of rhymes. It felt like this record would never end. There’s a P-Funk vibe on Power. There’s Kendrick Lamar! I listened to the clean version in the car with the family. I like it better than the explicit version. It’s still all pretty slow. Why doesn’t anyone get above 100BPM? Pay Up boosts the tempo a little. Sassy is cool and a little faster. I guess I should give up on there ever being another Tribe Called Quest. Why weren’t they nominated? Because Grammys.

Flower Boy Tyler, The Creator

I didn’t find one thing on this mess that I liked.
