Blogging the 61st Grammys Category 83 – Best Music Video

Award to the artist, video director, and video producer.

APES*** – The Carters

THIS IS AMERICA – Childish Gambino

I’M NOT RACIST – Joyner Lucas

PYNK  Janelle Monáe

MUMBO JUMBO – Tierra Whack

I guess I’m the last person in the World to realise The Carters are Jay-Z and Beyonce. That said, out of these videos theirs was my favorite. It’s set in the Louvre and is very entertaining and visually interesting. I never would have guessed in a billion years who it was if I hadn’t watched the video. The Childish Gambino was something I wish I hadn’t watched. I love the song and the artist, the video was too violent for me. Joyner Lucas I first heard audio only and it really confused me at first. Seeing the video I totally get it – much better than Brad Paisley and LL Cool J‘s “Accidental Racist” from a few years back. “Pynk” is just ridiculous. I like the song ok, but the video is too over the top for this old man. She gives Hammer a run for his money in the pants department, though. If you enjoy trips to dentist involving lots of blood, you’ll love Tierra Whack. I wish I hadn’t seen this.

Blogging the 2017 Grammys Category 1 – Record Of The Year

Redbone Childish Gambino
Despacito Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee Featuring Justin Bieber
The Story Of O.J. JAY-Z
HUMBLE. Kendrick Lamar
24K Magic Bruno Mars

What a weird assortment of Record of the Year nominees. Three of these are pretty spacey, expirimental songs, then you have the Bruno Mars and the Luis Fonsi. I can’t make heads or tails of what these Grammy kids are listening to. But lordy, I H AVE NO W COMPLETED MY TALK AND LISTENED TO ALMOST EVERYTHING NOMINATED FOR A GRAMMY. 4,500+ TRACKS. It took a few months and until 4 PM the day of the Grammy broadcast. Of these nominees my guess is Bruno will win. Thank you, and goodnight.

Blogging the 2017 Grammys Category 2 – Album Of The Year

“Awaken, My Love!” Childish Gambino
4:44 JAY-Z
DAMN. Kendrick Lamar
Melodrama Lorde
24K Magic Bruno Mars

Out of these, my favorite (and the only one I’ll ever listen to again) is Childish Gambino. I picked through the Lorde, sounds like someone dumped her so she made an album. She hears sounds in her mind. So yay we get to hear them. Bruno Mars will probably win.

Blogging the 2017 Grammys Category 18 – Best Traditional R&B Performance

Laugh And Move On The Baylor Project
Redbone Childish Gambino
What I’m Feelin’ Anthony Hamilton Featuring The Hamiltones
All The Way Ledisi
Still Mali Music

Out of this bunch, I’ll go with Redbone again. The others are all middle of the road ballads – Ledesi and the Baylor Project are Whitney-style ballads – Anthony Hamilton is a puzzling stab at quasi doo-wop, and Mali Music is meh.

Blogging the 2017 Grammys Category 19 – Best R&B Song

First Began PJ Morton
Location Khalid
Redbone Childish Gambino
Supermodel SZA
That’s What I Like Bruno Mars

The best of these tunes has to be Redbone from Childish Gambino – there’s what I think is a Bootsy sample in there – but the tune sticks with me the most. Bruno’s song is ok – the best arranged of these songs. The PJ Morton song is not one the standouts from his record in my view, the Khalid is just so nerdy and whiney (and boring), and I don’t get SZA at all.

Blogging the 2017 Grammys Category 20 – Best Urban Contemporary Album

Free 6LACK 6LACK

This is one of the most boring records I’ve ever heard. I ask again, is this an effect of the opioid thing? Is everyone on downers? This gauze-laden slow reverb drenched half-assed music is making me insane. Wake up everybody!

“Awaken, My Love!” Childish Gambino

This one starts out like another sad sack slow record. What the hell is going on? Thank God Have Some Love breaks into an early Funkadelic groove – 2nd song in about the last 300 I’ve liked. Boogieman also gets a thumbs up. More cowbell! Are those Funkadelic drum samples? Sure sounds like it. Or Parliament – those are definitely samples. Yeah, Riot is a Funkadelic sample of Good to Your Earhole. No wonder I like this record. It’s all P-Funk samples. I’ll definitely go back and listen to this all the way through after the Grammypalooza subsides.

American Teen Khalid

Eh. I don’t like this kind of singing. Is this EMO R & B? What’s up with these whiney dudes? This has a big EDM influence. Not my thing, moving on.
Ctrl SZA

Let me tell you a secret. I’ve been bangin’ your homeboy while you were in Vegas. Slow, boring, boring and slow. There is a song called Drew Barrymore. This is terrible. Who started this crap? Who is everyone copying? The Weeknd? Can’t wait for everyone to move on.

Starboy The Weeknd

Oh my goodness – I think this is the guy everyone is copying. I wish these winey sad-sack folks would get married and settle down. The topics and the music – so boring. Slow, boring, poor me nonsense. “I just need a girs who gonna really understand.” If you’re this mopey on record what’s it like to be around you all the time? Are you mopey and sad? Might be the problem.
